The Thessaloniki sewage network “avoided” twelve tons of cooking fat in the one-year implementation of the EYATH information and advisory program “Sewage with fat? No, thank you!”, aimed at the city’s catering entrepreneurs. This was announced in today’s online update on the pioneering program for Greek standards, which is based on the logic of the circular economy and the triptych “trap – dispose – recycle”.
The Sewerage Network Consultant of EYATH, Apostolos Danas, referred in detail to the problem created by the uncontrolled discharges of edible fats, oils and other fatty substances (Fat – Oil – Grease, FOG) in the internal networks of businesses and in EYATH facilities, as well as in the natural recipient, the Thermaikos, where – due to overflows – incidents of surface pollution occur, a threat to public health and healthy entrepreneurship. Mr. Danas made particular reference to the importance of the program for the tourism industry of Thessaloniki, which is growing rapidly, making it imperative to strengthen the cooperation of the owners, managers and staff of all catering businesses. “The wastewater disposal permit is a legal obligation for catering businesses, but it also brings a reciprocal benefit, as those who have it and implement a system for receiving used oils from a properly licensed company can get a discount on the previous year’s sewage fees,” explained the special advisor of EYATH.
With this program, EYATH is pioneering, investing in prevention, information and education, constantly being “present” among catering entrepreneurs and taking care of public health and the natural environment.
