Resilience through AI and smart metering

The imperative need for proper water management, conservation, and reuse was highlighted during the “Investments to Address Water Scarcity” panel at the “Green Deal Greece 2025” conference. Organized yesterday by the Technical Chamber of Greece in collaboration with economix.gr at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, the conference was held under the overarching theme: “Green and digital transformation, infrastructure, and sustainable development at a critical juncture: challenges and opportunities for investment and resilience.”

EYATH was represented by Maria Petala, a chemist and Board member, who highlighted the company’s long track record in water services and environmental stewardship in Thessaloniki, as well as the capabilities and high level of expertise possessed by its technical and administrative staff. “Plans to expand into neighboring municipalities and Halkidiki are therefore logically sound; however, we must first thoroughly examine the relevant legislative framework,” Ms. Petala noted.

Regarding water adequacy in Thessaloniki, she emphasized that, based on operational data scenarios we have a “resilient system” over a five-year horizon taking into account extreme scenarios, while extending the timeframe to eight years for more realistic climate condition scenarios. “Nevertheless, we are not simply sitting back and watching developments unfold; we are evolving by integrating digital tools, expanding our infrastructure, and—above all—moving toward a predictive maintenance framework so that we can address faults… before they even occur,” she emphasized, essentially outlining EYATH’s strategic planning for the coming years.
Ms. Petala made special mention of the use of AI tools to optimize network operations, citing a pilot project with Siemens to monitor sewage system overflows, as well as the installation of 200,000 smart water meters across the Thessaloniki metropolitan area—measures “that will improve revenue collection, meter reading, and network monitoring.”
