EYATH responded immediately to the need to clean Thessaloniki’s waterfront using a floating anti-pollution vessel, following the intense eutrophication phenomena recently observed in the gulf.
EYATH decided to once again make a significant contribution to cleaning the Thermaic Gulf with the anti-pollution vessel “Alkippi”—as part of its corporate social responsibility program and at the request of the Ministry of the Interior (Sector for Macedonia and Thrace). This action follows recent reports of unsightly conditions and foul odors caused by persistent high temperatures and prolonged southerly winds, which have prevented the renewal of the gulf’s waters. The company had previously carried out a three-month cleanup operation during the spring (March–May).
The vessel is currently conducting an intensive surface cleanup of the city’s waterfront, removing floating debris and scatterring, persistent patches of phytoplankton; it operates by separating water from the collected material and retaining only the solid residues. The anti-pollution vessel’s operations will span the entire summer, running five days a week for six hours a day; its route will cover the area from the Port of Thessaloniki to the Concert Hall and back, as well as from the port to Agia Triada or around the Axios and Aliakmonas Deltas, as the need arises.
Since 2010, EYATH has been at the forefront of efforts to clean the Thermaic Gulf of floating debris and surface pollution, generating environmental, social, and developmental benefits for the region and our marine ecosystems.
