A peaceful “march” for water on the slogan “Rendezvous at the public taps!” is being prepared by EYATH in collaboration with Greenpeace and the Municipality of Thessaloniki on Saturday, March 22, 2025, World Water Day, with the aim once again of strengthening the network of public taps and providing everyone with easy access to clean water in public spaces.
Specifically, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, the street band “Kroustofono” will begin a musical peaceful “march” to Egnatia, where the first new tap out of 10 in total that EYATH will install in central parts of the city will be inaugurated. The banner of the march will be painted with slogans and drawings about water and its importance, a creation of the children who visit the Water Museum for educational tours. The musicians will end up at the height of Egnatia, where a kinesiological event will be presented by the Melpo Vassilikos team entitled “Flow – A kinesiological journey through water” and references to the eternal journey of water, its importance as a common good and its experiential relationship with man.
At the end point of the musical “march”, in addition to the new water fountain, a stand will be installed for more information and the distribution of water bottles to passers-by, with the emphasis of course on the importance of consuming tap water to protect the environment from plastic bottles.
The Greek office of Greenpeace is also participating in the action, which already runs the “See you at the Taps” program to defend the inalienable right of all of us to clean, drinking water, the reduction of single-use plastics and waste, as well as the rational use of water. The Municipality of Thessaloniki strongly insists on supporting the network of public taps, with the next bet being the Ottoman fountains of the Upper Town and their restoration, while the EYATH Workers’ Union will also install these new taps voluntarily after its similar offer for the Nea Paralia front.
This year’s action is a continuation of the initiative that began on last year’s Water Day, bringing 10 new taps along the Thessaloniki waterfront. World Water Day 2025 is dedicated by the United Nations to the protection and salvation of our planet’s glaciers. Saving glaciers is a survival strategy for people and the planet, while we must also manage meltwater in a more sustainable way, the UN points out.
The stand at Agia Sophia and Egnatia St. will be set up on Saturday 22/03 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
