EYATH’s carbon footprint reduced by 33%

EYATH received the “green light” for its 2023 greenhouse gas emission report, in accordance with the ISO 14064-1:2018 (Greenhouse Gases) standard and the relevant instructions of the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

According to this international standard, which quantifies greenhouse gas emissions from direct and indirect sources at the level of an organization or company, EYATH achieved a reduction of 33% (compared to 2022, the reference year), both thanks to the implementation of its sustainability action plan and due to the improvement of the electricity provider’s CO2 emission factor. In fact, the carbon footprint of EYATH, as an absolute value, is clearly lower than the relative average in many European countries, based on data from EurEau (European Federation of National Associations of Water Supply and Sewerage Companies). Specifically, the annual total carbon footprint of EYATH for the main pollutant categories amounted to 43,929.89 tons CO2eq (CO2 equivalents), while with the addition of the remaining categories it amounted to 45,566.00 tons CO2eq.

“We continue to invest in “green” technologies and initiatives, such as the signing of an agreement for the supply of electricity from renewable energy sources (PPAs), in order to contribute to the reduction of the carbon footprint. We seek to continuously reduce our energy consumption and promote our energy efficiency through RES, always in line with the National Climate Law, the National Energy and Climate Plan, and the National Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change”, pointed out EYATH’s CEO, Anthimos Amanatidis.

EYATH systematically records and monitors greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its activities to reduce its carbon footprint. Emissions are categorized into three areas: 1. direct emissions from sources controlled or owned by the company, 2. indirect emissions from the consumption of electricity, heating and cooling, 3. other indirect emissions from the company’s value chain. As the emissions of the second category essentially determine the size of the carbon index, contributing 88.69% to the company’s total carbon balance, electricity consumption emerges as a primary source of CO2 for EYATH. This is why the company’s strategic planning focuses mainly on reducing electricity consumption and producing it from renewable sources.
