EYATH’s carbon footprint, as an absolute value, is clearly lower than the relative average in many European countries, assured yesterday from the “Energy and Environment” panel of the 8th Thessaloniki Development Conference the CEO of EYATH, Anthimos Amanatidis.
“Especially in our sector, the transportation, treatment and distribution of water – in the case of Thessaloniki from Aliakmonas to our taps – is an energy-intensive process anyway. Energy is also required because the water cycle must… close and therefore we also need energy for the transportation and treatment of wastewater”, explained Mr. Amanatidis, who pointed out that “we reduced our carbon footprint by 33% in 2023, both thanks to the implementation of our sustainability action plan and due to the improvement of the CO2 emission factor of the electricity provider”.
“We took the lead”, he continued, “by being the first company in the public and broader public sector to conclude a green bilateral contract for the supply of electricity (PPA), we prepared and are implementing a comprehensive program for the modernization and energy upgrade of our facilities and in collaboration with Siemens we installed the SIWA Blockage Predictor, aiming to prevent overflows and floods in the combined sewerage network of Thessaloniki”, said Mr. Amanatidis, giving just a few examples of energy-environmental actions of EYATH.
The energy panel of the 8th Thessaloniki Development Conference generally addressed good practices for addressing the consequences of climate change, which reduce the environmental footprint and at the same time save resources for sustainability and sustainable development, even in fields and activities that were previously considered polluting, such as mining.
