More than 1,000 informational visits to mass catering establishments in Thessaloniki were made over the course of a year by special partners of EYATH, as part of the pioneering program “Drainage with… fats? No, thank you!” to protect the sewer network from edible fats and change the mentality on these issues.
On the occasion of the completion of one year since the start of the program, EYATH is organizing an online reporting briefing on Monday, November 11, at 11 a.m., in order to assess the benefits and answer any questions from interested parties.
Specifically, within the framework of the program, which is being implemented for the first time in Greece by EYATH, 1,158 visits were made by specially trained personnel, in order to make Thessaloniki entrepreneurs aware of the benefits of investing in prevention, by installing properly sized grease trapping equipment and adopting good practices in their kitchen. During the first year of the program, 300 businesses participated, 235 proposals were received for pre-screening, 98 properly sized grease traps were successfully installed and 50 applications were submitted for a waste disposal permit.
By participating in the program, entrepreneurs themselves cover their legal obligations by obtaining from EYATH, as they are entitled to, a special sewage permit, are exempt from the regular costs of blocking and restoring their internal network, while at the same time EYATH is exempt from large maintenance costs. Of course, the major beneficiaries of the change in attitude and mentality of entrepreneurs on this issue are the local community itself and primarily the natural recipient of our treated discharges, Thermaikos.
“Compliance with the sewage regulation seems easy at first glance. However, these are entrenched behaviors in relation to our discharges into the sewage network, attitudes that are very difficult to change. Our bet is precisely this: to change the mindset of business”, points out Anthimos Amanatidis, CEO of EYATH. “That’s exactly why, for a year now, we have been informing entrepreneurs about the problems of uncontrolled fat dumping, educating them on best practices for liquid waste management and urging them to comply with their legal obligations. We are there for whatever they need,” he adds.
The Special Sewerage Regulation (SSR) of EYATH S.A. was approved in September 2021 (Government Gazette 425B/15.09.2021). The SSR determines the conditions that must be met by the entity carrying out any type of economic activity during which liquid waste is produced, in order for it to be disposed of in the sewage network of EYATH or to be transported directly to the company’s wastewater treatment facilities. Businesses must install appropriate equipment so that the values of the physicochemical parameters of their liquid waste, which end up in the EYATH network, do not exceed the maximum permitted quantity. If they meet this obligation, they also receive the required special sewage permit from EYATH.
