A new waterworks interconnection project

EYATH is proceeding this Sunday with the construction of the second major waterworks interconnection project of the Aravissos and Aliakmonas aqueducts, which will provide alternative “lines” to the water supply of the Thessaloniki Urban Complex.

Specifically, from midnight on Sunday, March 9 until the early hours of the morning (estimated to be until 10 a.m.), work will be carried out to connect a new Φ600 cross-section pipeline at the intersection of Agios Dimitrios and Ifaistionos Streets in the Municipality of Thessaloniki. The water supply will consequently be interrupted during these hours in the wider area of the center of Thessaloniki in Aggelaki – Egnatia – Monastiriou – Anagennisseou – Dytiki Eisodos – Roxanis – 26th October – Nikis Avenue, as well as in the adjacent Streets.

This is the second project to interconnect the Aravissos and Aliakmonas aqueducts – the main sources of water supply for Thessaloniki -, which will allow alternative water supply “lines” to be created in the areas of Sykies, Ano Poli, Eptapyrgio, Xirokrini, Ampelokipi and Menemeni.

“The completion of this second project also gives the company the ability to be flexible and even better manage the available water reserves in the event of an emergency or pressures due to climate change. It is a key project, it sets new foundations for the upgrade of our quality of life in Thessaloniki, which is why we ask for the understanding of residents and catering entrepreneurs. We also assure them that every effort will be made to complete the work as early as possible on Sunday morning”, pointed out the CEO of EYATH, Anthimos Amanatidis.

It is reminded that the first project to interconnect the two aqueducts (systems of networks and facilities that transport water to the water supply areas) was completed in December 2019. EYATH is adapting its development program to the changing demands of climate change, hydrological conditions and consumption needs by shielding, improving and even redesigning its infrastructure. Its business plan continues in parallel with significant maintenance work on large water supply pipelines and the expansion of the Thessaloniki Water Treatment Plant, which will significantly increase the available quantities of water and create conditions for expanding the network to new areas.
