Magnolias for the environment in Evosmos!

Students from the 16th Primary School of Evosmos: dedicated gardeners!

EYATH celebrated this year’s World Environment Day by planting magnolias, Judas trees, hibiscus, and bay laurel trees at the Evosmos Traffic Education Park, in collaboration with the Region of Central Macedonia’s Department of Development and Environment, the Municipality of Kordelio-Evosmos, and the Thessaloniki Police Officers’ Club. Students from the 16th Primary School of Evosmos also lent a hand, turning the event into a true celebration of nature and the environment!

This marked the symbolic launch of a broader tree-planting program in the Municipality of Kordelio-Evosmos, following EYATH’s donation of over 900 trees and shrubs. The planting was carried out by the Municipality’s Department of Environment and Green Spaces, with the assistance of 5th and 6th-grade students from the nearby 16th Primary School of Evosmos, under the guidance of an agronomist and relevant municipal staff. EYATH presented the environmental program “The Wastewater Cycle in Thessaloniki,” during which—through engaging visual materials—children learned about the journey of our waste through the sewage network and the problems caused by improper disposal. They were specifically informed about what can and cannot be discarded in kitchen sinks and toilets, fostering environmental responsibility and awareness. Additionally, in collaboration with the “Vergina” TV station and under the auspices of the Municipality of Kordelio-Evosmos, a presentation on the nutritional value of water was given to the students.

“World Environment Day offers a significant opportunity to join forces for the protection and enhancement of our natural and urban environment.” “Today’s initiative demonstrates in practice the importance of cooperation between local government, EYATH, and the educational community, with the shared goal of creating more green spaces and fostering environmental awareness among younger generations,” noted Stathis Avramidis, Deputy Regional Governor for Development and Environment of the Region of Central Macedonia. He added: “I would like to congratulate EYATH for its long-standing environmental sensitivity and for the valuable donation of trees and shrubs, which will make a substantial contribution to improving residents’ quality of life. As the Region of Central Macedonia—and personally as Deputy Regional Governor for Development and Environment—we support every initiative that enhances urban greenery and cultivates environmental awareness for a more sustainable future.”

According to the Mayor of Kordelio-Evosmos, Lefteris Alexandridis, “the environment across the globe is being harmed by human actions, and it is our duty to protect it.” “It is our duty to pass this sensibility on to future generations—to ensure our children understand that a clean, greener, and less polluted environment is the key to a better daily life and improved health for us all.” “Through this mass tree-planting event—held to mark World Environment Day, which we celebrate today—we, the participating organizations, are sending the message that protecting the environment is everyone’s responsibility and requires concrete action. From day one, our administration has prioritized improving the urban environment in the Municipality of Kordelio-Evosmos; significant efforts have been made in this direction, and they will continue with undiminished intensity. Recently, urban greenery in our area has increased, and very soon our municipality will no longer have the lowest ratio of green space per resident within the Thessaloniki metropolitan area,” he added.

“Climate change—which has evolved into a climate crisis—is humanity’s greatest challenge. Tree planting is the fastest and most effective way to curb it, and when carried out through the collaboration of multiple participants, it yields the best possible results. We thank EYATH and the Municipality of Kordelio-Evosmos for their excellent cooperation,” noted Dimitris Apostolou, President of the Thessaloniki Police Officers’ Club.

“Caring for the environment is not merely an obligation for EYATH, but an ongoing investment in our city’s future. Through tree sponsorships and planting initiatives, we are boosting the metropolitan area’s green footprint and helping to create a more sustainable, healthy environment for all our fellow citizens. We began with substantial donations of greenery to the Municipality of Thessaloniki; on World Water Day, we were in Kalochori for a tree-planting event; and today—World Environment Day—we are celebrating in Evosmos by greening yet another urban neighborhood,” stated Anthimos Amanatidis, CEO of EYATH S.A. Through public awareness campaigns in the media and on the ground—engaging directly with the public—as well as by organizing open events, participating in environmental initiatives, and fostering volunteerism, EYATH maintains open channels of communication with local communities. Indeed, this is the message of this year’s World Environment Day 2026: to heed the urgent warnings regarding climate change and to take collective action, personally driving the shift toward a sustainable planet.
