EYATH presented the results of a four-year systematic monitoring program regarding PFAS levels in Thessaloniki’s drinking water at the “ZeroPM” project workshop. Held in Mytilene in early October, the workshop focused on the removal of these “very persistent, mobile, and toxic (vPMT) compounds”—known as PFAS—from water.
Representing EYATH, Dr. Nikoletta Xanthopoulou, Head of the Laboratory Department at the Thessaloniki Water Treatment Plant, presented the findings of the regular monitoring of PFAS levels in Thessaloniki’s water, as conducted in the company’s laboratory. “It was an excellent opportunity to share conclusions regarding long-term pollution trends and the challenges involved in chemical analysis, as well as to highlight the importance of continuous monitoring for the protection of water resources and public health.” “The drinking water in Thessaloniki gives no cause for concern, as four years of systematic monitoring of the sum of PFAS shows that these ‘forever chemicals’ are undetectable in the vast majority of samples,” said Ms. Xanthopoulou.
It is worth noting that EYATH is not yet legally required to monitor so-called “forever chemicals” (Government Gazette 3525/25.05.2023), yet it has been doing so for four years, demonstrating responsibility, foresight, and strategic vision. “It is an investment in consumer trust and sustainability,” Ms. Xanthopoulou pointed out, commending the constructive discussions and the collective commitment of the participants to addressing persistent pollutants and promoting a cleaner, more sustainable future.
The workshop brought together participants from distinguished universities and research institutions across Europe, serving as a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration.
