Open House Draws Over 700 Visitors!

More than 700 people walked through the doors of EYATH—visiting both the office building at 127 Egnatia Street and the Water Supply Museum—over the weekend of November 22–23 as part of Open House Thessaloniki 2025.

A total of 460 people toured EYATH’s new “green” office building. Open House volunteers guided visitors through office areas, administrative spaces, and the conference room, highlighting interesting details regarding the construction and architectural design of this nearly zero-energy building. Originally built between 1968 and 1973, the “glass” building underwent an upgrade between 2021 and 2023—amidst the pandemic—based on the architectural design by the firm “K-Architects.” Visitor feedback was once again glowing—”this is where I’d come to work as a manager,” “in a space like this, even if you didn’t feel like working, the desire would come naturally,” “a wonderful workplace”—with particular interest focused on its high-tech energy-efficient and sun-shielding outer shell.

Meanwhile, the historic “Slaughterhouse” complex—originally part of the city’s water supply infrastructure and now housing the Water Supply Museum—attracted 245 visitors over the past two days. The old central pumping station of the former Thessaloniki Water Supply Organization (now EYATH) was designed and built during an era when metal construction was at its peak across Europe. For Thessaloniki specifically, this complex stands as one of the earliest examples of a model prefabricated structure. Open House visitors—both Greek and international—were impressed by the structure, the machinery in operation, and the clearly distinguishable energy phases of the water supply system (steam, diesel, and electricity). Through Open House, and for two days each year, public and private buildings open their doors to the people of Thessaloniki free of charge, transforming the city into a vast museum where the exhibits are the buildings themselves and their distinctive architecture!
